Bertha H. Gvazdauskas, 96
Bertha Helen (Gedmin) Gvazdauskas, a longtime resident of Sutton, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2022. She will now join her husband Peter who preceded her in death as well as her parents, her brothers, Bruno and John, and her sister, Ann. Bertha and Peter enjoyed a long and loving relationship of 53 years, and now they will be reunited in a better place.
Bertha was born in New Bedford, MA, on October 19, 1925 to her parents, Charles and Helena (Sluzeuc) Gedmin who were both born in Lithuania. Bertha grew up in Westfield, MA and graduated from Westfield High School where she enjoyed the USO dances and where she would meet her future husband – she was quite a dancer!
Bertha was a talented administrative assistant and worked her way through the ranks. She worked for the Fair Store in Worcester, Millbury Public Services, and spent the rest of her working career at Rand Whitney in Worcester. Her last job was as HR Manager, and her job interviews were renowned for how hard they were!
Besides her love and dedication to her husband, she was the mother of two boys – PJ (Susan) and David (Erin) who were the joy of her life. She would spend countless hours on adventures and picnics with her boys. Bertha also has 4 grandchildren of whom she was very proud.
Next to raising her family, her love of the Lord and involvement with her church, St Mark’s in Sutton, were her passion. She would be a ready church volunteer – religious education teacher, Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Eucharist, young children ministry leader, and shawl ministry leader. Peter often said she should get a room at the church for all the time she spent there, but it was her passion that she passed on to everyone she met. Many of her long and lasting relationships came from her volunteer work to include work at Sutton Elementary School and Sutton Senior Center.
Bertha’s calling hours will be Sunday, May 22, from 3:30 to 4:30 PM in Turgeon Funeral Home, 56 Main St., Millbury. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM on Monday, May 23, in St Mark’s Catholic Church, 356 Boston Road, in Sutton. Interment in New Howard Cemetery, Armsby Road, Sutton, will follow the Mass. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift to St Mark’s Church.
We will be seeing you again Mother!
